Election Recap – What’s Next
Now that the 2022 general election is a few weeks behind us, we wanted to provide you key highlights important to our region.
- Governor Gretchen Whitmer defeated Tudor Dixon | 53.17% – 45.21%. Governor Whitmer will begin her second term of office in 2023.
- Both Attorney General Dana Nessel and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson won
- The Democrats have not had total control of state government since 1982
- Elissa Slotkin narrowly defeated State Senator Tom Barrett for the MI 7th Congressional District | 50.79% – 47.24%
- The Democrats retained the U.S. Senate Majority
- The Republicans won the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives
- The State Senate flipped to Democrat control. 20-18
- ***This is the first time since 1983 that the Democrats have controlled the State Senate.
- The State House flipped to Democrat control. 56-54
- Statewide Proposals
- Proposal 1 (Term Limits) passed 65.5% – 34.5% (LRCC supported)
- Proposal 2 (Voting Rights) passed 58.6% – 41.4%
- Proposal 3 (Reproductive Rights) passed 55.5% – 44.5%
- Local Proposals
- The city of Lansing public safety bond proposal passed | 53.5% – 46.5% (LRCC supported)
- Delta Township public safety millage passed | 60.0% – 40.0%
- Delta Township bond proposal failed (New sheriff substation) | 54.1% – 45.9%
Lansing Regional Chamber-PAC Endorsed Candidates Celebrate Election Night Success
The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee (LRC-PAC) endorsed candidates were overwhelmingly successful during the Nov. 8 general election. The LRC-PAC had a 96% success rate, with 30 out of the 31 candidates endorsed winning their election during the 2022 cycle.Learn more about the LRC-PAC – Contribute Today!
Key Candidates Serving in Leadership Roles
Several LRC-PAC endorsed candidates will serve in leadership roles in the new 2023-2024 State Legislature. Those include the following:
- Senate Majority Floor Leader Sam Singh Senate
- Appropriations Chairwoman Sarah Anthony
- House Appropriations Chairwoman Angela Witwer
This is the first time since 2003-2004 Legislative session where both Appropriations chairs came from the same region. “We are extremely proud of Senator-elect Anthony and Representative Witwer,” Steve Japinga of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce said. “Being chosen by their caucus leaders speaks to the leadership and political acumen they will bring to their respective committee roles. Both are well positioned to continue to work toward addressing economic challenges, accelerating our growth, and promoting opportunity for residents and businesses in our state.”
