Weighing the Costs: Urging Thoughtful Votes on Ingham County’s Millages
The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) encourages Ingham County voters to carefully consider two key proposals on the November 5th ballot: the Housing & Homeless Millage and the Lodging Excise Tax Increase. While the LRCC supports the goals of the Housing & Homeless Millage, it expresses reservations due to the lack of a clear plan for fund allocation and concerns about the financial burden on taxpayers.
In contrast, the LRCC fully endorses the Lodging Excise Tax Increase, which would primarily affect visitors, generating revenue for tourism infrastructure improvements without straining local residents. This balanced approach reflects the LRCC's commitment to addressing community needs while ensuring fiscal responsibility. For a detailed exploration of the LRCC's positions, please read the full letter below.
LRCC Supports Eaton County Tax Limitation Ballot Proposal
The LRCC has announced its support for the Eaton County Tax Limitation Proposal, which will be presented to voters on November 5, 2024. The proposal seeks to increase the county's tax levy by an additional 3.0 mills, generating approximately $12 million annually to fund essential services, address budget shortfalls, and support critical public safety and infrastructure.
"This proposal addresses a clear and urgent need for additional revenue to safeguard the services that maintain the safety, stability, and attractiveness of Eaton County as a place for businesses to grow and invest," said Tim Daman, President & CEO of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. "Without it, the business community and the region as a whole would face significant challenges, including reduced public safety and deteriorating infrastructure."
The LRCC also emphasizes the importance of fiscal accountability and transparency in how the new tax revenue is managed. We recommend that Eaton County establish a Financial Health Team composed of county officials, business, and community leaders ensure responsible use of the additional funds, focusing on maintaining essential services and promoting economic development.
