Lansing Regional Chamber Not Supportive of
City of Lansing’s Proposed Property Tax Increase

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) has chosen to not support the proposed 4 mill property tax increase which will be on the May 3rd ballot for the City of Lansing.

The LRCC feels that due to the current economic climate, new tax increases would send the wrong message to existing and potential businesses. The LRCC continues to encourage Lansing city officials to explore further efforts at achieving greater efficiency through regionalism, sharing and consolidation of services as well as continuing to explore reforms and greater efficiencies within city government.

“We applaud Mayor Virg Bernero and City Councilmember Kathie Dunbar for their leadership in difficult times and for agreeing to let the voters of Lansing decide this issue at the ballot box,” said Kristin Beltzer, LRCC senior vice president of Government Relations and Public Affairs. “Our members and business community strongly believe that local government reform and regional collaboration are essential to providing taxpayers with cost-effective government.”

The LRCC is also encouraged by the Mayor’s announcement of convening a Blue Ribbon Committee on regionalism during the recent discussion on regional fire consolidation. The business community feels that the prospect for reductions in the City’s public safety budgets should serve as impetus to accelerate inter-governmental discussions surrounding consolidation and other opportunities to share services.

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce is the largest business organization in the tri-county region, serving a business population of more than 14,000 companies.  LRCC is dedicated to making business in the region more profitable by providing programs that create new customers, enhance member visibility and create a prosperous economic environment.  LRCC members rely on four key areas to help them succeed: Business Advocacy, Business Expansion, Business Savings & Business Exposure.
